Tuscany 1787 5 paoli
This specimen was lot 2758 in Goldberg sale 109 (Los Angeles, January 2019), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States: Tuscany. 5 Paoli (Mezzo Francescone), 1787. Pietro Leopoldo. Bust right. Crowned, oval shield with spikes in order chain. Reflective fields, fully lustrous with gorgeous original toning. NGC graded MS-63." This type was struck 1778-79 and 1787 and is quite scarce. Despite the "PISIS" stamped on the reverse, this coin was struck in Florence, not Pisa. Peter Leopold was the second son of Maria Theresia of Austria and emperor Joseph II's brother. He became emperor himself on the death of Joseph in 1790 but his reign lasted only until his death in 1792. In 1800, Tuscany was occupied by the French and not returned to Hapsburg rule until 1815.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.75 g, 0.917 fine silver.
