Tuscany 1787 francescone Dav-1518
This specimen was lot 7565 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Tuscany. Francescone (10 Paoli), 1787. Pietro Leopoldo. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details. A sharply detailed Francescone, with charcoal toning throughout the reverse fields, but medium gray toning dominant on the obverse. The darker tone is what appears to count as environmental damage, with no pitting or other damage notable on the surfaces." This type was struck 1786-90 and is not rare in worn condition. The francescone replaced the earlier tollero in 1747 and was so named to honor Francis of Lorraine, Holy Roman Emperor and husband of Maria Theresia. Peter Leopold was the second son of Maria Theresia and emperor Joseph II's brother. He became emperor himself on the death of Joseph in 1790 but his reign lasted only until his death in 1792.
