Tuscany 1785 francescone Dav-1516
This specimen was lot 24112 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Tuscany. Francescone (10 Paoli), 1785. Florence Mint. Pietro Leopoldo. ANACS AU-50 Details--Cleaned. Only gently cleaned, this pleasing crown displays little in the way of actual handling with no other distractions." This type is listed for 1783-86 and is inexpensive for an Italian crown. Peter Leopold was the second son of Maria Theresia of Austria and emperor Joseph II's brother. He became emperor himself on the death of Joseph in 1790 but his reign lasted only until his death in 1792. In 1800, Tuscany was occupied by the French and not returned to Hapsburg rule until 1815.
