This specimen was lot 32285 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy: Tuscany. Pietro Leopoldo gold Ruspone (3 Zecchini) 1784 MS65 NGC. A luxurious jewel bathed in warm golden luster, unveiling exceptional preservation and visual appeal at every turn. Close inspection of the legends, particularly on the reverse, reveals clear evidence of die clashing, with ample texturing in the fields leaving room for close inspection and enjoyment. One-of-a-kind and utterly charming, this selection must be experienced in hand to appreciate its full quality and charm. Ex. Hess-Divo AG Auction 313 (May 2009, Lot 407). From the Caranett Collection." This type was struck 1765-90, i.e., Pietro's entire reign. This coin had a face value of three ducats. Peter Leopold was the second son of Maria Theresia of Austria and emperor Joseph II's brother. He became emperor himself on the death of Joseph in 1790 but his reign lasted only until his death in 1792. In 1800, Tuscany was occupied by the French and not returned to Hapsburg rule until 1815.
