This specimen was lot 5066 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $1840. The catalog description [2] noted, "Italian States - Tuscany. Tallero (10 Paoli), 1791. Ferdinando III. Head right. Reverse: Crowned shield with spikes in order chain. A few interesting clash marks in obverse field. Original fresh mint luster. Rare in top grades. NGC graded AU-58." This type was struck 1791-1801; this date is rare. The francescone replaced the earlier tollero in 1747 and was so named to honor Francis of Lorraine, Holy Roman Emperor and husband of Maria Theresia.
