Turkey AH 1223(24) 10 para
This specimen was lot 75752 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY. 10 Para, AH 1223 Year 24 (1823). Constantinople Mint. Mahmud II. NGC MS-65. Pristine surfaces demonstrate near complete brilliance, while the devices are accented by touches of slight gray tone, attesting to this example's originality. The slightly uncentered strike, a characteristic of the issue, reveals how deeply the denticles oscillate into the flan. Perfect for experienced Ottoman collectors." This type of years 22-25 is from Mahmud's eighth issue. The ten para of the first issue weighed 2.8-3.2 grams. In general, thirty para made a zolota and forty para made a kuruş, altho frequent devaluations made a hash of the system. The frequent debasements, the result of military defeats at the hands of Russia, deranged the economy.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.80 g, 0.220 fine silver, 17 mm diameter.
