Steve Album Auction 52, lot 1833

This specimen was lot 1833 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, AV 1/4 yeni altin, Kostantiniye, AH1223 year 24, beautiful brilliant luster, UNC." This quarter yeni altin was struck years 24-30. Yeni means "new" in Turksih, and "new altin" is its description in the SCWC. The gold was the victim of frequent manipulation and the denominations changed names in a confusing manner. The SCWC lists zeri mahbubs, rumi altins, adli altins, yeni altins and hayriye altins for this period. Matters were regularized in the reign of Abdul Mejid, with gold coins issued in multiples of the kuruş.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.28-0.31 g, gold, 12 mm diameter, this specimen 0.39 g.

Catalog reference: KM-641.
