SB1122-75751r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75751 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY. 10 Para, AH 1223 Year 6 (1823). Constantinople Mint. Mahmud II. NGC MS-63. Somewhat bright and flashy with a steel gray hue to the surfaces and underlying luster pooling in the fields. A RARE issue, especially at this state of preservation, that is scarcely presented at auction. Specialists will be delighted by this Choice piece that also happens to be the only example NGC has certified to date." This type of years 3-14 is from Mahmud's second issue. The ten para of the first issue weighed 2.8-3.2 grams and the third issue was only 1.6-1.8 grams. The frequent debasements, the result of military defeats at the hands of Russia, deranged the economy.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.1-2.5 g, 0.465 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 559.
