Sincona sale 31, lot 362

This specimen was lot 362 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,324 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "REPUBLIC OF TUNISIA, 100 dinars 1997ce/1418ah AU RRR Pf." This type honored president Zine El Abdine Ben Ali on the tenth year of his reign. It is unlikely to have circulated beyond the president's circle of cronies and supporters. It is accompanied by a gold fifty francs (KM 390), also available with Arabic and French legends. Ben Ali, having overthrown Habib Bourgiba in part to end his cult of personality, immediately set about establishing his own.

Specification: 38 g, 0.900 fine gold, 1.092 troy oz AGW, this specimen 37.95 g.
