Tunisia G93-2032r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2032 in Goldberg sale 93 (Los Angeles, September 2016), where it sold for $1,234. The catalog description[1] noted, "Tunisia. 50 Dinars, 1997 PCGS PF67 DC. 10th Anniversary. Head of Zine El Abdine Ben Ali. PCGS graded Proof 67 Deep Cameo." This type honored president Zine El Abdine Ben Ali on the tenth year of his reign. It is unlikely to have circulated beyond the president's circle of cronies and supporters. It is accompanied by a gold hundred francs (KM 405), also available with Arabic and French legends. Ben Ali, having overthrown Habib Bourgiba in part to end his cult of personality, immediately set about establishing his own.

Recorded mintage: unknown, proof only.
