Tunisia 2000 50 dinars KM-395
This specimen was lot 365 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,374 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "REPUBLIC OF TUNISIA, 50 dinars 2000ce/1421ah AU RRR Pf ." This type, struck with French (shown here) and Arabic legends, honored the thirteenth anniversary of the revolution which toppled the senile Habib Bourgiba in 1987. It was accompanied by a silver ten dinars and a gold hundred dinars (KM 410 and KM 411). It is unlikely to have circulated beyond the president's circle of cronies and supporters. Zine Ben Ali, Bourgiba's successor, was himself overthrown in 2011.
Recorded mintage: 70 proofs.
Specification: 21 g, 0.900 fine gold, .607 troy oz AGW, this specimen 20.98 g.
