Sincona sale 31, lot 373

This specimen was lot 373 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 80 CHF (about US$95 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "REPUBLIC OF TUNISIA, 10 dinars 2001ce/1422ah AR Pf." This type, struck with French and Arabic legends (shown here), honored the fourteenth anniversary of the revolution which overthrew the senile Habib Bourgiba in 1987 and the 19th Mediterranean Games. It was accompanied by a gold fifty dinars (KM 431) and a gold hundred dinars (KM 432). It is unlikely to have circulated beyond the president's circle of cronies and supporters. Zine Ben Ali, Bourgiba's successor, was himself overthrown in 2011.

Recorded mintage: 625 proofs.

Specification: 38 g, 0.900 fine silver, 1.092 troy oz ASW, this specimen 38.10 g.

Catalog reference: KF 335, Schön 375, KM 378.
