Trier 1448 groschen
This specimen was lot 70807 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Trier. Groschen, 1448. Coblenz Mint. Archbishop Jakob I von Sierck. PCGS MS-61. The only example of this RARE early dated groschen that has been certified by PCGS, the present coin is exceptionally bright with a wavy satin texture across its surfaces. Mainly argent, hints of charcoal tone can be seen around the legends that demonstrate complete originality. A Must-have from an area in western Germany that is famous for its intact Roman constructions and rich medieval history." In the fifteenth century, the archbishops of Trier were prolific issuers of goldgulden from several mints.
