Sincona sale 80, lot 2275

This specimen was lot 2275 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,318 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GERMANY | Trier, Erzbistum, Johann II. von Baden, 1456-1503. Weisspfennig o. J. (1464), Koblenz. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. Prachtexemplar. (archbishopric of Trier, John II of Baden, 1456-1503, undated white penny, Coblenz mint. Rare in this condition, Good extremely fine, Cabinet piece.)"

The Weißpfennig was struck by the archbishops of Trier, Mainz and Cologne at Coblenz, starting in the late fourteenth century. It became popular because of its good alloy. It was eventually copied by numerous petty princes along the Rhine.
