Künker sale 386, lot 4691

This specimen was lot 4691 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €650 (about US$840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Adolph II. von Nassau, 1461-1475. Weißpfennig (Groschen) o. J. (ab 1464), Mainz. Mit Titel 'Archiepiscopus'. St. Petrus mit Kreuzstab und Schlüssel unter gotischem Dach, unten das Wappen von Nassau//Wappen Mainz/Nassau zwischen den Wappen von Köln, Trier (oben) und Bayern (unten, für Pfalz) in Dreipaß. Kl. Prägeschwäche, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (archbishopric of Mainz, Adolf II of Nassau, 1461-75, undated white penny, Mainz mint, with the title "Archiepiscopus". Obverse: St. Peter with cross and keys under a Gothic dais with the arms of Nassau; reverse: arms of Mainz and Nassau between the arms of Cologne, Trier and Bavaria in a trefoil. Slightly weakly struck, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The Weißpfennig was struck by the archbishops of Trier, Mainz and Cologne at Coblenz, starting in the late fourteenth century. It became popular because of its good alloy. It was eventually copied by numerous petty princes along the Rhine.
