Künker sale 386, lot 4694

This specimen was lot 4694 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,877 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Dietrich II. von Isenburg zu Büdingen zum 2. Mal, 1475-1482. Weißpfennig (Groschen) o. J. (1477-1482), Mainz. Prägung des Münzvereins. Hüftbild des Hl. Petrus über Wappen//Die Wappen von Köln, Bayern und Pfalz um Punkt. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Erworben von der Münzenhandlung Waldemar Wruck, Berlin. (archbishopric of Mainz, Dietrich II of Isenburg zu Büdingen for the second time, 1475-82, undated white penny, Mainz mint, struck per the monetary union. Obverse: half-length portrait of St. Peter over arms; reverse: the arms of Cologne, Bavaria and Palatinate around a dot. Extremely rare, very fine.)"

The Weißpfennig was struck by the archbishops of Trier, Mainz and Cologne at Coblenz, starting in the late fourteenth century. It became popular because of its good alloy. It was eventually copied by numerous petty princes along the Rhine.
