Trautson 1620 thaler Dav-3425
This specimen was lot 1101 in Jean Elsen sale 120 (Brussels, March 2014), where it sold for €240 (about US$395 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, TRAUTSON et FALKENSTEIN, Paul Sixtus (1589-1621), AR Taler, 1620, Vienne. Grande tête. Droit: B. à droite, portant le collier de la Toison d'or. Revers: Ecu couronné, sous l'aigle impériale couronnée, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Poinçonné au droit et au revers. Très Beau. (Paul Sixtus of Trautson and Falkstein, 1589-1621, silver thaler of 1620, Vienna mint, large head. Obverse: bust to right, wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms below the crowned imperial eagle, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Punch marks on obverse and reverse, very fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 4893 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €700 (about US$916 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH. DIE ÖSTERREICHISCHEN STANDESHERREN, TRAUTSON, GRAFEN. Paul Sixtus von Falkenstein, 1598-1621. Reichstaler 1620, Wien. Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingfehler, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft 54, Dortmund 2010, Nr. 2563. (Holy Roman Empire, counts of Trautson. Paul Sixtus von Falkenstein, 1598-1621, Paul Sixtus von Falkenstein, 1598-1621, thaler of 1620, Vienna mint. handsome patina, planchet defects, extremely fine.)"
The count was given the mint right as a reward for his service to the emperor as governor of Tyrol. A double thaler and half thaler also exist. All issues from this locality are rare and expensive.
