Toluca (1915) 40 centavos
This specimen was lot 73468 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $280. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Estado de Mexico - Toluca. 40 Centavos, ND (1915). PCGS EF-45. Counterstamp of "40" within "C" on reverse of 1906 2 Centavos (KM-419). A nice example of this overstruck issue, bearing its countermark boldly and exhibiting glossy dark brown surfaces throughout." The authorities in Toluca also issued cardboard chits and counterstamped one centavos into twenty centavos. While the twenty centavos was counterstamped over one centavos of the Estados Unidos and the Republic, this forty centavos is only known on Estados Unidos two centavos, probably because no copper two centavos were struck during the Republic.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: host coin 6 g, bronze, 25 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM-694; GB-267.
