Teutonic Order 1776-W kreuzer
This specimen was lot 4290 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €40 (about US$53 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM, Carl Alexander von Lothringen, 1761-1780. 1 Kreuzer 1776, Wertheim. Münzwardein Christian Franz Weber und Münzmeister Johann Christoph Eberhard. Mit Rosetten neben dem Münzzeichen auf der Rückseite. Feine Patina, sehr schön. (Teutonic Order, Charles Alexander of Lorraine, 1761-80, one kreuzer of 1776, Wertheim mint, with rosette on the reverse. Fine patina, very fine.)"
In the late eighteenth century, the Teutonic Order was in advanced decay, the Order's holdings being reduced to a few abbeys in Germany. The last remnants of their domains were secularized in 1805-10. One kreuzer was 1/120 of a convention thaler.
