Teutonic Order 1776-W 5 kreuzer
This specimen was part of lot 4289 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €120 (about US$158 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM, Carl Alexander von Lothringen, 1761-1780. a) 5 Kreuzer 1776, Wertheim. Münzwardein Christian Franz Weber und Münzmeister Johann Christoph Eberhard. Mit IUS ( W ) TIRT auf der Rückseite. b) 1 Kreuzer 1776, Wertheim. 0,69 g. Münzwardein Christian Franz Weber und Münzmeister Johann Christoph Eberhard. Die Rückseite mit 1 KR : / NACH DEM / CONVENT · / FVS · / W · 1776 E · und Klammern neben dem Münzzeichen auf der Rückseite. Beck/Morscheck 32.13; Prokisch 252 leicht var. 2 Stück., Sehr schön. (Teutonic Order, Charles Alexander of Lorraine, 1761-80, five kreuzer of 1776, Wertheim mint. A one kreuzer of 1776 is included. Two pieces, very fine.)"
In the late eighteenth century, the Teutonic Order was in advanced decay, the Order's holdings being reduced to a few abbeys in Germany. The last remnants of their domains were secularized in 1805-10. Five kreuzer was 1/24 of a convention thaler.
