Künker sale 406, lot 4288

This specimen was lot 4288 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €360 (about US$472 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM, Carl Alexander von Lothringen, 1761-1780. 20 Kreuzer 1776, Wertheim. Münzwardein Christian Franz Weber und Münzmeister Johann Christoph Eberhard. Feine Tönung, kl. Prägeschwäche, vorzüglich. (Teutonic Order, Charles Alexander of Lorraine, 1761-80, twenty kreuzer of 1776, Wertheim mint. Fine toning, slightly weakly struck, extremely fine.)"

In the late eighteenth century, the Teutonic Order was in advanced decay, the Order's holdings being reduced to a few abbeys in Germany. The last remnants of their domains were secularized in 1805-10. Twenty kreuzer was one-sixth of a convention thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: silver, this specimen 6.65 g.

Catalog reference: KM 149, Prokisch 249 A/a; Beck/Morschek 32.5.
