Künker sale 406, lot 4180

This specimen was lot 4180 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$853 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM, Carl Alexander von Lothringen, 1761-1780. 1/2 Konv.-Taler 1776, Wertheim. Fleckige Patina, vorzüglich. (Teutonic Order, Charles Alexander of Lorraine, 1761-80, half convention thaler of 1776, Wertheim mint. Spotty toning, extremely fine.)"

The major domains of the Teutonic Order were in Prussia, Livonia and Estonia (all lost by 1618) but they had estates in the Holy Roman Empire as well, where this half thaler originated. The last remnants of their domains were secularized in 1805-10.
