Teutonic Order 1776-WWE thaler Dav-2813
This specimen was lot 4287 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,231 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM, Carl Alexander von Lothringen, 1761-1780. Konv.-Taler 1776, Wertheim. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel, und Band mit Hochmeisterkreuz, am Armabschnitt die Signatur AD (Stempelschneider Anton Matthias Domanöck)//Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit aufgelegtem Hochmeisterkreuz und Mittelschild Lothringen, zu den Seiten je ein gekrönter Adler mit Lothringerkreuz am Halsband, im Abschnitt X · EINE F · MARCK · / Münzstättenzeichen W in Verzierung, zu den Seiten die geteilte Signatur W · - E · (Münzwardein Christian Franz Weber und Münzmeister Johann Christoph Eberhard). Feine Tönung, kl. Zainende, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, vorzüglich. (Teutonic Order, Charles Alexander of Lorraine, 1761-80, convention thaler of 1776, Wertheim mint. Obverse: armored and mantled bust right with the sash of the grand master, initials below truncation; reverse: crowned and quartered arms with the escutcheon of Lorraine supported by two crowned eagles wearing crosses of Lorraine, weight and mintmark in exergue. Fine toning, minor clip, some edge defects, extremely fine.)"
In the late eighteenth century, the Teutonic Order was in advanced decay, the Order's holdings being reduced to a few abbeys in Germany. The last remnants of their domains were secularized in 1805-10.
