Sweden 1649 ore
This specimen was lot 880 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, October 2010), where it sold for $69. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWEDEN. Christina, 1632-1654. Copper 1 Öre, 1649. Avesta. Crowned quartered shield. Rv. Crossed arrows divide 1 – ÖR, legend includes Roman numeral date MDCXLIX. Porous surfaces, Strong Very Fine."
Sweden, blessed with little in the way of exportable natural resources, hit upon copper as a foreign exchange earner. Large copper coins (including the famous plate money) were struck at several mints both for internal use and for export. This type was issued 1644-53. Most of the examples offered on today's market show varying degrees of corrosion from being buried and this specimen is no exception.
Recorded mintage: 1,914,800.
Specification: 51.5 g, copper.
