Straits Settlements 1891 50 cents
This specimen was lot 21409 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 50 Cents, 1891. Victoria. NGC AU-58. Deep gray toned with excellent detail remaining within the intricate portions of the design and strong flash appearing in the fields. As a date, conditionally RARE in this near-Mint quality, this coin being one of two graded AU-58 at NGC with a single coin graded finer." The type was struck in 1886-1901 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and is scarce in nice condition despite the large mintage.
