St. Gall 1816-K kreuzer
The first specimen was lot 5424 in Sincona sale 68 (Zürich, October 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | St. Gallen | Stadt und Kanton, Kreuzer 1816, St. Gallen. Vorzüglich-FDC. (city and canton of St. Gall, kreuzer of 1816, St. Gall mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"
The second specimen was lot 3552 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 80 CHF (about US$106 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ St. Gallen, Kreuzer 1816, St. Gallen. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, canton of St. Gall, kreuzer of 1816, St. Gall mint. Rare in this condition, About uncirculated.)"
Switzerland was united in a loose confederation in the Middle Ages and left the Holy Roman Empire in 1648. Each canton issued its own coins until Switzerland was made a French puppet state by Napoleon. Cantonal issues resumed in 1807 and batzen (= 1/40 of a thaler) were issued for St. Gall until 1817. This type, one quarter of a batzen, was struck 1807-16.
