Sincona sale 94, lot 3225

This specimen was lot 3225 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 150 CHF (about US$208 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, Kreuzer 1815, St. Gallen. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, city and canton of St. Gall, kreuzer of 1815, St. Gall mint, About Uncirculated.)"

Switzerland was united in a loose confederation in the Middle Ages and left the Holy Roman Empire in 1648. Each canton issued its own coins until Switzerland was made a French puppet state by Napoleon. Cantonal issues resumed in 1807 and batzen (= 1/40 of a thaler) were issued for St. Gall until 1817. This type, one quarter of a batzen, was struck 1807-16.

Recorded mintage: 1,116,000.
