Sincona sale 47, lot 2980

This specimen was lot 2980 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$270 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND, St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, Batzen 1814. FDC. (canton of St. Gall, batzen of 1814, Uncirculated.)"

Switzerland was united in a loose confederation in the Middle Ages and left the Holy Roman Empire in 1648. Each canton issued its own coins until Switzerland was made a French puppet state by Napoleon. Cantonal issues resumed in 1807 and batzen (= 1/40 of a thaler) were issued for St. Gall until 1817. This type was struck 1808-17.
