Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 698

This specimen was lot 698 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €100 (about US$132 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1848. Isabel II. Madrid. 1/2 real = 5 décimas. Leves rayitas. EBC-/MBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Isabel II, half real (five tenths) of 1848, Madrid mint. Light scratches, about extremely fine.)"

Unlike the silver coin of Ferdinand VII, the half real of Isabel II was a copper coin struck 1848-53 at Madrid, Jubia and Segovia. After the reform of 1865, it was superseded by the five centimos de escudo. Confusingly, the traditional two, four and eight maravedis continued in production into the early 1850's.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: copper, 18.65-19.25 g, 31-32 mm diameter, this specimen 18,46 g.
