Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 427

This specimen was lot 427 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €7,000 (about US$9,238 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1848. Isabel II. Madrid. DG (Departamento de Grabado). 4 reales. Mínimas rayitas. Muy bella. Brillo original. Rarísima. Única conocida. S/C. (kingdom of Spain, Isabel II, four reales of 1848, Madrid mint, DG = department of engraving. Tiny scratches, very handsome, original luster, extremely rare, the only one known. Uncirculated.)"

Cayón mentions two patterns for this date: this one and another with the word "CORONA" added to the reverse (Cayón-17020). The price given in Cayón suggests that more than one exists. A similar pattern was struck for the twenty reales (Cayón-17181). The regular issue, with assayer's initials CL, is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare, perhaps unique.

Specification: 5.25 g, 0.900 fine silver, this specimen 5,34 g.

Catalog reference: KM unlisted, Cayón-17019, AC. 455.
