Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 693

This specimen was lot 693 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €30 (about US$40 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1849. Isabel II. Jubia. 2 maravedís. Ceca: Jª. Ex Colección Manuela Etcheverría. EBC-/EBC. (kingdom of Spain, Isabel II, two maravedis of 1849, Jubia mint, mintmark Jª. About extremely fine.)"

The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. This two maravedis was worth 1/34 of a real; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Jubia, Segovia and Barcelona 1836-50 and was accompanied by copper one, two and eight maravedis. The type is not scarce. A variety with no "A" in the mintmark exists.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: copper, 3.02 g, 18.5-19.5 mm diameter, this specimen 2,64 g.

Catalog reference: KM 532.2, Cayón-16581, Cal-548.
