Spain 1849-Seg 2 maravedis

Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 73054

This specimen was lot 73054 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $80. The catalog description^[1] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Maravedis, 1849. Segovia Mint. Isabel II. NGC MS-64 Brown. Deep chocolate brown toning with a sterling portrait of the queen." This type was struck in Jubia, Segovia and Barcelona 1837-50 and was accompanied by copper one, four and eight maravedis. The type is not scarce. A rare error exists with the date as "1489".

Recorded mintage: unknown but a slightly better date.

Specification: copper, 3.02 g, 18.5-19.5 mm diameter.
