Spain 1824-M AJ 2 reales
This specimen was lot 54440 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Reales, 1824-M AJ. Madrid Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC MS-66. A stunning example, this supremely argent and fully radiant minor exudes tremendous eye appeal and stands as one of the finest of the date observed." By 1824, Napoleon was dead and Ferdinand was securely on his throne. Most of Spain's American colonies had secured their independence tho the fighting in Peru continued. This type was struck in Madrid (shown here) 1814-33, in Seville 1815 and 1820-33 and in Cadiz 1810-12 only. Lower in fineness than contemporary Latin American issues, they were discounted in international trade. Tho priced fairly cheaply in the SCWC, this type is very difficult to find at U. S. coin shows.
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.812 fine silver.
