Spain 1732-S PA 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 30625 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1732 S-PA XF45 NGC, Seville mint. Well-preserved for the type with an even amount of friction across the higher points and a number of contact marks within the fields. Additionally, this highly-desirable selection displays aged patina with moments of residual, coppery luster. Currently the only-known certified example of this date, and highly-desirable as such." All Spanish eight escudos are rare compared to their Latin American counterparts and this issue is no exception. The Madrid issues are substantially rarer than the Seville issues. The portrait type was struck in Seville 1729-38 and extended to the Mexico City mint in 1732.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.
