Sed36-0018r.jpg

This specimen was lot 18 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $16,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 8 escudos, 1659 (R), NGC MS 62, finest and only example in NGC census. A very bold and rustic cob with dramatically full shield and cross enhanced by deep toning, also bold full 59 of date despite typically crude peripheries, an important coin for the 8-escudos specialist." The SCWC lists three reverse varieties for this date: KM 112 (1634, 1638-49, 1654, 1659), with squares in the corners of the quatrefoil; KM 145 (shown here, 1659, 1663-65), with fleurs-de-lys in the corners; and KM 59.2 (1631-34, 1637-49, 1653-65), with blobs in the corners. All are scarce and KM 59.2 is rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.47 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 26.58 grams.
