Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 186

This specimen was lot 186 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €36,800 (about US$48,565 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1652/1. Felipe IV. Segovia. BR/I. 8 escudos. Algunos excesos de oro y mínima grieta del cuño. Muy bella. Precioso color. Rarísima. Sólo hemos tenido este ejemplar. EBC-. (kingdom of Spain, Philip IV, eight escudos of 1652, Segovia mint. Some excess metal and an edge crack. Very handsome, beautiful color, extremely rare, the only example known to us. About extremely fine.)"

This type was struck at Segovia 1627, 1632-33, 1636-39, 1651-52. All dates are rare. This date is known only with the repunched assayer's initials BR/I. The gold coinage from the other mints were cobs.
