Spain 1648-S R 4 escudos
The first specimen was lot 31859 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain, Philip IV gold Cob 4 Escudos 1648 MS61 NGC, Seville mint, KM 16, cf. Cay-6740. Nice, bold strike and well centered with light toning in the recesses." The second specimen was lot 31860 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip IV gold Cob 4 Escudos ND (1630-1647)-R VF (Clipped), Seville mint, cf. Cay-6724 (for type). A presentable example preserving the mintmark, assayer's initial, and denomination." This rare type was struck at Seville 1630-39, 1641, 1644-45, 1647, 1655, 1664. The year 1648 is an unlisted date in Cayón.
