Sed36-0020r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $6,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 4 escudos, 1641 (R), rare, NGC MS 60. Rich gold color, nearly full crown and shield with full denomination IIII• to right, full cross with nearly full tressure, bold date above." The SCWC lists KM 107.2 (date left of quadrilobe) for 1630-31, 1634, 1643 and 1647, and KM 56.2 (date above quadrilobe) for 1630-33, 1636-41, 1644-47, 1655 and 1664. The auctioneers catalogued this as KM 107.2 but we vote for KM 56.2. Four escudos were also struck at Madrid and are very rare therefrom.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
