Spain 1592(v) F 2 reales
This specimen was lot 1934 in the last Stack's Coin Galleries sale of July 2011, where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 2 Reales, 1596 F. Granada. Felipe II (1556-98). Shield without Portugal, somewhat unclear date at l., ;o/F/ii ;r. Rv. Plain cross, lobate frame with castles and lions. Strong detail. VERY FINE." We must comment that the cataloguers got the date and mint incorrect, which was probably why it did not sell. This type is listed in Cayón for 1592-98 from Valladolid (shown here), Toledo, Segovia, Granada and Seville. The Valladolid mint did not use a letter for a mintmark but rather four pennants on a single pole, visible below the date on the obverse.
