This type was struck 1970-89. An aloe plant blooms on the reverse. Soon after, the apartheid regime collapsed and the African National Congress took over. Astoundingly, no bloodbath ensued, an outcome attributable to the unbending integrity of Nelson Mandela. In 1983, US$1 = 1.13 rand; at present (April 2024), US$1 = 18.8 rand.
