This specimen was lot 23061 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 1/2 Krugerrand, 1984. PCGS PROOF-68 DEEP CAMEO Secure Holder. Krause lists a mintage of 9,900 making the issue in proof far lower than the bullion version. A super example without spots, tone or fog. Includes original box of issue." The krugerrand was introduced by the South African government in 1967 as a way of marketing the gold produced from her mines. It peaked in popularity 1974-84 when it virtually had the bullion market to itself. The burst in gold prices in 1979-80 caused the regime to introduce half, quarter and tenth krugerrands, a practice imitated by many other issuing countries. The introduction of the maple leaf (Canada), the libertad (Mexico), the panda (China), the nugget (Australia) and above all the gold eagle (United States) cut into its market share. It is still in production but not in its former numbers.

Recorded mintage: 176,780 plus 9,900 proofs.

Specification: 16.97 g, 0.917 fine gold, .500 troy oz AGW, 27 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-B2; KM-107.
