This type was struck 1970-90. The denomination was converted to bronze plated steel in 1990 and reduced in size. Soon after, the apartheid regime collapsed and the African National Congress took over. Astoundingly, no bloodbath ensued, an outcome attributable to the unbending integrity of Nelson Mandela. In 1983, US$1 = 1.13 rand; at present (April 2024), US$1 = 18.8 rand.
Recorded mintage: 9,687,000 plus 11,000 proofs.
