This type was struck 1970-90. A blue crane struts on the reverse. The denomination was converted to copper plated steel in 1990. Soon after, the apartheid regime collapsed and the African National Congress took over. Astoundingly, no bloodbath ensued, an outcome attributable to the unbending integrity of Nelson Mandela. In 1983, US$1 = 1.13 rand; at present (April 2024), US$1 = 18.8 rand.
