This specimen was lot 75673 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 2 Rand, 1983. South African Mint. PCGS PROOF-68 Deep Cameo. This stunning coin showcases exceptional craftsmanship and boasts a PCGS PROOF-68 Deep Cameo grade, attesting to its impeccable preservation and remarkable contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices. Issued by the Republic of South Africa, this coin features the iconic springbok antelope, symbolizing the nation's rich wildlife heritage." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. Sold to collectors and bullion speculators, this type never achieved the popularity of the krugerrand introduced in 1967. The first two rand coin struck for circulation was issued in 1998.
