This specimen was lot 12259 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $1,821. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Krugerrand, 1981. ANACS PROOF-67." The krugerrand was introduced by the South African government in 1967 as a way of marketing the gold produced from her mines. It peaked in popularity 1974-84 when it virtually had the bullion market to itself. The introduction of the maple leaf (Canada), the libertad (Mexico), the panda (China), the nugget (Australia) and above all the gold eagle (United States) cut into its market share. It is still in production but not in its former numbers.

Recorded mintage: 3,185,827 plus a 12,900 proofs.

Specification: 33.93 g, 0.917 fine gold, 1.000 troy oz AGW, 32.7 mm diameter.
