Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 55528

This specimen was lot 55528 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOHEMIA. Silesia. Groschen (3 Kreuzer), 1696-CB. Brieg Mint. Leopold I. NGC MS-64. Mistakenly noted on NGC holder as 1696-EB and Prague mint." This type is listed in the SCWC under Silesia. Known dates include 1676, 1695-1702 and 1705. It is fairly common. This denomination was struck at various mints all over the Hapsburg domains. Three kreuzer were 1/20 gulden or 1/30 thaler in the seventeenth century. With the introduction of the convention thaler around 1740, the denomination would slip to 1/40 thaler.
