Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg 1622-HR 3 kreuzer KM-225
This specimen was lot 1518 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €80 (about US$106 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SILESIE-LIEGNITZ-BRIEG, Johann Christian (1621-1639), AR Groschen, 1622HR, Ohlau. D/ Aigle éployée, t. à g. R/ Deux écus accolés sous une couronne. Superbe. (Germany, duchy of Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg, John Christian, 1621-39, silver groschen of 1622, Ohlau mint. Obverse: eagle display, head to left; reverse: two accolated shields under a crown. Extremely Fine.)"
The principality of Ohlau was one of the parts of the duchy of Silesia-Liegnitz-Brieg. During the kipper period (1621-23), many localities in the duchy struck kipper groschen or three kreuzer. The SCWC lists KM 225 (Ohlau, shown here), KM 226 (Brieg), KM 227 (Reichenstein), KM 228 (Haynau), KM 229 (unknown), KM 304 (Kreuzburg), KM 305 (Herrnstadt), KM 306 (Herrnstadt), KM 307 (Liegnitz), KM 308 (Liegnitz), KM 309 (Liegnitz), KM 310 (Ohlau) and there are probably others. A concerted effort was made to recall and melt down the kipper coinage so survivors are scarce today.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, probably debased, this specimen is 0,77 g.
