Scotland (1604-09) unite Fr-48
This specimen was lot 32298 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Scotland: James VI (1567-1625) gold Unite ND (1604-9) XF Details (Cleaned) NGC. Ninth coinage, Thistle mm. A boldly struck and visually appealing example of this popular Scottish denomination, bearing what is perhaps the least offensive of the 'details' designations; for, in truth, a large percentage of coins this age have encountered cleaning at one point or another, and this example has nearly entirely retoned. Moderately circulated leading to shallow wear across the surfaces, and yet this piece still exhibits excellent detail due to a clearly excellent striking allowing the metal to receive the full design from the dies. Handsomely colored a vivid 'creamy' gold, evidence of russet tone forming in the recesses of the legend; an altogether captivating selection of Scottish gold, destined for a higher-tier cabinet. From the Collection of a Berkshire Gentleman." The coinage of Scotland prior to unification with England is confusing. Bullion was scarce, so issues were small and sporadic. Pence and shillings were used but were not worth their English equivalents. This coin had a face value of twenty shillings at the time of issue. This example realized only one-third of the catalog value.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
