Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp 1623-ST 1/16 thaler
This specimen was lot 11200 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €69 (about US$80). The catalog description[1] noted, "Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. 1/16 Taler, 1623-ST. Friedrich III. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." The dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp were a cadet branch of the house of Oldenburg, which ruled Denmark. They divided the rule of Schleswig-Holstein between them and the history of the duchies is the story of their quarrels and feuds. Friedrich III favored Sweden in an attempt to avoid Danish domination and his daughter Hedwig Eleonora became queen of Sweden. Other daughters married into Mecklenburg-Gustrow, Baden-Durlach, Hesse-Darmstadt and Anhalt-Zerbst. This type was struck 1623-25 and 1628 with two and three digit dates. It is not rare. We're presuming the mintmark over the duke's head is an "ST" monogram but it may be something else.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1 g, silver, 20 mm diameter, this specimen 1.58 g.
