Künker sale 263, lot 1365
Holstein in 1648

This specimen was lot 1365 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €400 (about US$517 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP, HERZOGTUM Friedrich III. 1616-1659. Reichstaler 1622, Schleswig. 28.75 g. Münzmeister Samuel Timpf. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Holstein-Gottorp, Frederick III, 1616-59, thaler of 1622, Schleswig mint. Weakly struck, very fine.)"

The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. Most coin issues are rare. Friedrich III favored Sweden in an attempt to avoid Danish domination and his daughter Hedwig Eleonora became queen of Sweden. Other daughters married into Mecklenburg-Gustrow, Baden-Durlach, Hesse-Darmstadt and Anhalt-Zerbst. This one minted 1622-26 is only scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-3698; Lange 320 c, KM 64 (formerly KM 27).
